I am working on a new module for our postgraduate certificate in Academic Practice about the development of academic careers - it seems to me that media involvement/celebrity is one potential stream to be considered - all streams have ethical issues, moral risks and other dangers - as some doors open others shut.

Glad to see the case for some academic integrity being made here. The pressures seem too often to be in the opposite direction.

Great post. I've been embroiled in my own conversation about the role of blogging for academics, and I think many academics exhibit the kind of deep misunderstanding about the affordances of the weblog that you identify here. I recently wrote about this issue on my own blog, at http://jennamcwilliams.blogspot.com/2009/09/blogging-is-not-serious-writing-oh-re.html . I'd love for you to check it out!
